Tank Removals
ADR Environmental specializes in the removal of underground storage tanks (USTs), both regulated and unregulated. We highly recommend all USTs are removed from the ground and not abandoned in place. Prospective buyers of a property will often require previously abandoned USTs to be removed prior to proceeding with a real estate transaction. Furthermore, closure of USTs by removal and abandonment in place often cost the same, therefore there is usually no advantage to leaving the tank in the ground.
Unregulated tanks consist of all heating oil USTs of any capacity. An unregulated tank can be a typical 550-gallon heating oil tank that services a single family house or a 10,000-gallon heating oil UST at a residential apartment building. These tanks are exempt from registration fees with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and do not require a licensed site remediation professional (LSRP) to oversee closure. Other tanks that are exempt from regulation are heating oil USTs at commercial sites with a combined aggregate onsite use of 2,000-gallons or less and fuel USTs (gasoline or diesel fuel) at farms and residential sites with a combined aggregate onsite use of 1,100 gallons or less.
Regulated USTs include but are not limited to all Heating Oil USTs with an onsite aggregate capacity greater than 2,000-gallons for commercial use and all gasoline and diesel fuel USTs located on commercial properties. Prior to removing these USTs all registration fees must be paid to the NJDEP and closure must be overseen by an LSRP. A site investigation report and LSRP forms are required for closure.
